Several parks were established across Japan during the lavish years of the bubble economy, many of which were forced to close again when the economy took a downturn. Theme parks and amusement parks are among Japan’s top-visited sites!
Those that remain in service are the ones that are larger and better known, usually with their own unique characters. Below is a list of some of Japan’s best amusement parks and theme parks.

1. Tokyo Disneyland
Tokyo Disneyland was created by Walt Disney Imagineering in 1983 and has so far hosted more than 170 million visitors, the third most visited theme park in the world. The park is made up of 7 areas with attractions, exhibits, restaurants, cafes, and shops in different themes. The park is often described as “the magical kingdom” where visitors feel like they’re in a world of fairy tales.
The Tokyo Disney Resort, together with Tokyo DisneySea, serves as the largest amusement park in the world, including shopping malls and resort hotels. In fact, FYI, TOKYO Disney Resort is not in Tokyo. It’s currently in the prefecture of Chiba!
2. Universal Studios Japan
Universal Studios Japan or USJ is one of the world’s four theme parks at Universal Studios. The park was opened in 2001 and is located in Osaka City’s waterfront, Japan’s second-largest city. The park is home to various attractions including popular films including Harry Potter, Minions, Jaws, Spider-Man, Jurassic Park and more as well as exciting live performance shows.
Every year, the park welcomed around 8 million visitors, making it the world’s fourth most visited theme park. Visitors are extremely popular with the character goods sold at the official park stores.
3. Legoland Japan
Legoland Japan is the first Lego theme park opened in 2017 in Japan, located in Aichi Prefecture, Nagoya City. The theme park consists of seven Lego world theme areas, including several rides and attractions.
Miniland is an iconic city of 10,496,352 blocks of Lego with some of the most iconic landmarks of Tokyo Station, Kiyomizu Kyoto Temple, and Nagoya Castle. The park also offers a factory tour that presents Lego bricks manufacturing. Limited menu and merchandise are available in shops and restaurants.
4. Tokyo DisneySea
The Tokyo DisneySea is located next to Tokyo Disneyland in the Tokyo Disney Resort, which opened its doors in 2001 and is Japan’s second theme park in Disney. It has 7 water-based areas such as the harbor, the lagoon, the waterfront, the delta and more. The park is related to the myths and legends of the sea.
Tokyo DisneySea is designed to cater to more adults and couples, while the main target of Tokyo Disneyland is younger children. The park has numerous fancy dinners and at night you will enjoy drinks and intimate light-ups. The park sells restricted official merchandise in shops opposite Tokyo Disneyland and shopping is one of the park’s main activities.
5. Tokyo Joypolis
Are you a tech geek or a game lover? You may want to find out the most if yes, this is the theme park. The Tokyo Joypolis (Too) in the Odaiba district of Tokyo, which was owned by SEGA, is an indoor theme park. The park has several of the latest and most up-to-date functionality such as the Zero Latency VR, an attraction for RV visitors with VR headsets and a number of topics such as SONIC, Initial D, Transformers, Resident Evil and more.
There are several other retail and entertainment facilities in the city. The park is located between 3 and 5 F of the popular shopping mall, Decks Tokyo Beach. Odaiba is one of Tokyo’s most famous districts with few monuments, including Gundam statue, Rainbow Bridge and the Ferris Wheel.
